GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?

SEO tries to rank your pages in a list of search results. GEO tries to get your business named inside an answer an AI assistant writes. They share most of their groundwork, but they are judged by different results, so it helps to treat them as two questions rather than one. If you are new to the term, start with what generative engine optimization is.

The short version

Why they overlap so much

AI assistants answer from the same web that search engines index. Google says its AI features need no special optimization and that the normal search fundamentals still apply. ChatGPT’s search is widely reported to use Bing’s index, so being indexed in Bing matters as well as Google. Good SEO is therefore most of the foundation for GEO.

Where GEO asks something new

SEO asks whether your page ranks. GEO asks whether an assistant knows your business exists, can tell it apart from similarly named ones, and finds enough outside confirmation to name it.

Which should a local business do first?

  1. SEO and local basics. A site that can be indexed, a complete Google Business Profile with the right main category, and consistent name, phone and address.
  2. Reviews. For local businesses, review volume tracks with whether you are named at all.
  3. Then GEO checks. Ask the questions customers ask, record what assistants say and which sources they cite, and fill the gaps that show up. In our own checks, the gaps were usually off-site listings and reviews, not the website.

Questions people ask

What is the main difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO tries to rank your pages in a list of search results. GEO tries to get your business named inside an answer that an AI assistant writes. SEO is measured in rankings and clicks. GEO is measured by whether, and how often, an assistant names you when asked.

Do I need GEO if I already do SEO?

SEO is the foundation, so keep doing it. GEO adds a check that SEO does not cover: what AI assistants actually say about your business and which sources they rely on. For a local business that check often turns up gaps in reviews and listings rather than in the website.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Google says normal search fundamentals still apply to its AI features and that no special optimization is required. Assistants draw on the same web that search engines index, so SEO and GEO share most of their work.

Which should a local business do first?

SEO and local basics first: a site search engines can index, a complete Google Business Profile with the right category, and real reviews. Those also feed GEO. After that, check what assistants say and fill the gaps they reveal.

How do you measure GEO?

Ask the same real customer questions on a schedule, record the platform, date, answer and cited sources, and repeat them. A single answer proves little because answers vary from run to run.
